More than 1,600 cultural heritage sites are presently registered within Abu Dhabi Emirate. These include more than 1,300 archaeological sites, 150 palaeontological (fossil) sites, and eighty historic buildings. Archaeological sites are found throughout the Emirate with notable concentrations on the coast and islands as well as Al Ain. Historic buildings are restricted mostly to Abu Dhabi Island and the surrounding area, Al Ain, Liwa and Dalma Island.
